Apparently Alban Berg wrote a letter to Rudolph Kolisch prior to the premiere and described the Lyric Quartet as a piece that embodied “suffering destiny”, referring to the unrevealed subtext beneath the quartet that actually represented stages of Berg’s secret love affair with a married woman named Hanna Fuchs-Robbetin.
